Within the past month, Professor Deborah Whaley has had her work mentioned in the New York Times and been nominated for a poetry award, as well as given an interview on local television and a keynote address.
- Her book, Black Women in Sequence: Re-inking comics, graphic novels, and anime, and her work on comics more broadly, was mentioned in the New York Times article, "‘Black Panther’ and the Revenge of the Black Nerds."
- Her poem, "Whispers and Lies," has been nominated for a Rhysling poetry award. It was initially published in the Bram Stoker nominated book Sycorax's Daughters, a horror anthology of fiction and poetry by African-American Women.
- She was interviewed on KCRG (ABC) as part of their story, "Black Superhero Week' continues with screening of 'Black Masculinities in Comics."
- She delivered the black history month keynote address a the University of Texas at Austin on her book, Black Women in Sequence: Re-inking comics, graphic novels, and anime, on February 7, 2018.
